“I grew up in New York City since I was born on Broadway baby, moved downtown, when I was just 19 to start on a new life on the New York scene.” The lyrics are about how I moved downtown, I was introduced into an entirely new way of thinking that was so different than what I’ve been taught. It’s saying iconic imagery in my whole life taught me to look at Jesus and look at religion in a certain way. So I say ‘Black Jesus’ as a representation of an entirely new way of thinking and that’s what I felt when I was exposed to meeting new people and seeing new things.
And ‘Amen Fashion’ - that reference came from me later in the song saying “Put it on, amen fashion, celebrate, style your passion, wear out your vision.” Saying new way of thinking is as easy as putting on an outfit.”
